Summer Interns 2023

We have eight interns in 2023. There are four high school students and four college students who will join us for the summer.

High School Interns

Marianne Hawley is a junior at CM Russell High School and was recommended by Mr. Nathan Gregier, a biology teacher who was an intern a number of years ago, working with Drs. John Bermingham and Teresa Gunn. He praised Marianne’s ability to work with others, complete assignments and contribute to extracurricular tennis and student government. She plans to double major in chemistry and education and would like to be a science teacher.  She has worked at the Backroads Bar and Grill as a server, host and sous chef for 3 years.

Soren Hanson is also a junior at CM Russell High School and his letter of recommendation indicated that Soren is “a perceptive, sharp, quick individual with a high aptitude for math and science.  He is driven to understand how things work, as well as how to find solutions to problems that are outside the norm.”  He has worked at the Meadowlark Country Club cooking and providing food at the pool and has been a regular bell-ringer for the Salvation Army.

Emma Guter is a junior at Great Falls High School; she is the younger sister of Joseph Guter who is a Goldwater Scholar and current student at the University of Chicago.  Emma indicated that long term she is interested in being a physician – a pediatric trauma surgeon, to be more specific.  She would like to learn more about science and research and how it might fit with a surgical career.  She has worked as a concession worker and a lifeguard at the Electric City Water Park and volunteers at Toby’s House caring for children.

Kate Fitzgerald is attending the Red Lodge High School and looks forward to spending the summer in Great Falls with her grandparents.  She is interested in genetic disease, food science and innovation and anthropology.  She has worked as a cashier and stock inventory assistant at a hardware store and has worked in childcare while also being on both the volleyball and basketball teams.  Her letters of reference indicate that there is no similar experience available in Red Lodge and the ability to see firsthand the way science is done will allow her to define her future career path and goals.

College Interns

Claire Earl is a 2021 graduate of Great Falls High School and an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York where she expects to graduate in 2025.  At Columbia, she is the associate editor of the Columbia University Journal of Global Health, the outreach and social media coordinator for the Columbia University American Medical Student Association, and has been on the Dean’s list every semester since enrolling.  She has worked previously as a heavy equipment operator (for Earl and Son Farms) and as a nanny.

Leila Ilagan is a pre-nursing student at Great Falls College – MSU.  She graduated from CM Russell High School in 2021 and is fluent in both English and Filipino (Tagalog) languages and has been a member of student healthcare career organizations throughout her education.

Mylene Sebogo grew up in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta), a landlocked African nation with a per capita GDP of <$1400 per year (in comparison to the US GDP per capita of >$70,000).  She attended French school and then received a scholarship to go to the American School in her city.  She attended the University of California, Irvine, BEAM program and then enrolled at the University of Providence where she will earn her Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences.

Hope Gasvoda is a junior at the University of Providence, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. She grew up in Big Sandy, MT and is the great granddaughter of farmers who moved to Big Sandy from the state of Virginia and ultimately established Gasvoda and Sons Farms. She has worked as a teaching assistant, resident assistant, and would like to be a physician.
