  1. Summer Internships for High School and College Students – 2014

    Time to make summer plans!

    Students in their junior or senior year of high school, or freshman through senior year of
    college from one of the following counties are eligible: Cascade, Chouteau, Glacier, Lewis
    & Clark, Pondera, Teton, or Toole. Students should be on track for four years of math,
    biology, chemistry and/or physics. Stipends are paid to all participants however, the
    Institute does not provide housing for interns. Our funding source stipulates that we give
    preference to applicants from the above Montana counties, however, all are welcome to apply.

    Internships begin Wednesday, June 11, 2014
    and end Wednesday, August 13, 2014.

    To apply, include a letter of application highlighting your interest in science, a resume,
    transcripts (unofficial is fine), ACT or SAT scores (high school), and two letters of
    recommendation (in sealed envelopes signed across the flap), preferably from instructors in
    the science disciplines.

In addition to providing hands-on experience in investigational science, the students will observe and interact with other high school and college students in a laboratory- learning environment rather than a classroom. Workshops, journal clubs, and seminars supplement the research experience.  Each student will give a formal presentation at the end of the 9 weeks summarizing his/her project.

    Successful applicants to the program must agree to fully commit 10 weeks of their summer to the internship.  The reward is real-life experience participating in cutting edge research at a research institute with ties to world-renowned scientists and research universities.  Many of our interns have gone on to successful careers in research or medicine.

    McLaughlin Research Institute is committed to serving as an educational resource for students and teachers in Montana.  Summer research internships for talented high school students have been available since 1954, when Great Falls High School student, Irving Weissman, worked in the lab of the Institute’s founder, Dr. Ernst Eichwald.  Dr. Weissman now chairs the Institute’s Scientific Advisory Committee and is Director of Stanford University’s Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Institute.

    With the goal of improving science education and fostering critical thinking for as many students as possible, the summer internship program has been expanded to include college students and high school teachers.  This effort has been made possible by the support of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute K-12 Science Initiative.  Minorities are particularly encouraged to apply to these programs.

     

    Internships begin Wednesday, June 12, 2013 and end Wednesday, August 14, 2013.

  4. Science Teacher Program

    Our science teacher internship program – lasting two summers – sponsored by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute came to an end in August 2012.

    Beginning summer of 2013, only teachers who apply for and are awarded grants from various foundations may apply for the single summer internship program at the Institute. Teachers will use their awarded grant money for research time and support. Successful applicants will spend 9 weeks (June 13th – August 15th) in the laboratory of one of the Institute’s faculty actively engaged in research. In addition to providing hands-on experience in investigational science, participating teachers will observe and interact with high school and college students in a laboratory-learning environment rather than a traditional classroom. Scientific-related workshops, journal clubs, and seminars supplement the research experience.

    An additional goal for the teachers, once school begins in the fall, is to identify strong science students in their freshman or sophomore year with the potential to become good teachers and guide them in their course choices. This opportunity is open to high school or middle school science/math teachers. The teachers have the opportunity to continue their interaction with Institute faculty and staff throughout the academic year.

    Seminars aimed at improving scientific literacy and public support for science education will provide continuity with the summer program. As an added incentive, teachers can earn continuing education credits and/or experience toward an advanced degree. Stipends are paid to all participants to minimize financial barriers to participation.

    Great Falls High School graduate Liu Xu completed a MRI internship while studying neuroscience at UC-San Diego.

     

    Stanford University stem cell authority Irving Weissman was McLaughlin Research Institute’s first student intern in the 1950s. His internship inspired the education program that has grown to be, in his words, “the most innovative research training program in the country for high school and undergraduate students.”

    Doing my own experiments and thinking about how information really was obtained was a path that was really exciting for me – unavailable in high school – and something, which, of course, shaped my career,” Dr. Weissman said of his early experience at McLaughlin.

    Today the Institute’s faculty continues to help promising young students learn firsthand what no textbook can teach – critical thinking and scientific discovery. The opportunity to engage in world-class biomedical research helps inspire the next generation of scientists. Many of these students have gone on to distinguished careers, thanks in part to lessons learned at McLaughlin.

    McLaughlin is committed to serving as an educational resource for students and teachers in Montana, offering summer research internships for talented high school and college students, as well as high school teachers. During the past five years, support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute K-12 Science Initiative has expanded our program to include working with the Great Falls Public Schools to enhance science education.
